E-schooling Tip #4: Viewing and Writing Chinese on Windows XP |

All modern computers are capable of viewing and inputting Chinese. Here is the steps to get your computer running English Microsoft Windows XP ready for Chinese.
- To enable CJK-support for your Windows XP,
- Click on Start
- Go to Settings
- Click on Control Panel
- Double click Regional Options
- Click on the Languages tab
- Check Install files for East Asian languages
- Click on Apply
- If necessary insert the Windows XP installation cd. Your system will reboot afterwards
To install the IME's follow the following procedure - Click on Start
- Go to Settings
- Click on Control Panel
- Double click Regional Options
- Click on the Languages tab
- Click on the Details-button
- Select a language
- Select a Keyboard layout/IME
- Click on OK
Similarly, you can set up Chinese(Traditional) input method. What described above require no other software than those from Microsoft. There are some other parties who also provide enhenced input methods. - If HanYu PinYin is your input method, then Google Pinyin might be the best. It can produce both Traditional and Simplified Chinese. G
- For those who prefer ZhuYin input method, Yahoo! Input Method is an alternative. It is not as robust as the one from Google but Google doesn't support ZhuYin.
- Chewing is yet anotherZhuYin IME. It consumes less computer resource than the Yahoo!IME. The price to pay is the lesser intelligence it provides. There is no free lunch.
