School History
The Northern Westchester Chinese School (NWCS) was founded in February 1969 by several Chinese families, all working in IBM’s Research Division. In March of that year, classes began at Mohansic Elementary School in Yorktown Heights, under the name "Yorktown Chinese School". At that time, the school consisted of one teacher and 21 students. The next year, the school moved to the Yorktown Methodist Church. Currently we have more than 310 registered students and over 30 teachers. The classes, from pre-K through 12th grade, are conducted every Saturday morning during the regular school year at the Briarcliff Middle School in Northern Westchester County, New York.In addition, we offer a variety of electives including Chinese calligraphy, origami, beading, Chinese chess, dance, Kung Fu, guitar, table harp and more. Beginning in the Fall 2008 semester, NWCS will be adding a program for adults. Families of all backgrounds are welcome.

General Meeting Highlights
May 3, 2008
Both the chair of the Board, Dr. Shu-Ping Chang and our principal, Dr. Shiwa Fu, reviewed the accomplishments of the past year and looked to the challenges facing our school in the future. The meeting proceeded to elect the staff and board members for the next academic year. The four vacant positions on the board of directors, as well as Vice Principal and Treasurer, were filled by parents. Dr. Shu-Ping thanked the parents for volunteering and for continuing to carry the torch of the NWCS. Next, our Treasurer, Mr. Rene Yip , walked through the financial status. Other topics included the yearbook distribution methods; more fund raising ideas. The tuition increase of $75 for the next academic year was also announced. Q&A session followed.

Parents Network
Many parents find it a challenge to keep up with learning Chinese, myself included, and I speak and write Chinese. So I can understand whole heartedly, what a challenge it is for families that do not speak Chinese at home. Ann Daw shares her story.
